Commonwealth Games Canada (CGC) strengthens sport within Canada and throughout the Commonwealth by participating in the Commonwealth Games and by using sport as a development tool. CGC is: • the franchise Holder for the Commonwealth Games in Canada • responsible for: representing the Commonwealth movement in Canada; sending Canada’s representative teams to the Commonwealth Games; and acting as a member association of the CGF. • a member of the Canadian sport community Commonwealth Games Canada will: • Promote excellence in high performance sport • Foster the growth of Commonwealth sport • Share knowledge and expertise among Commonwealth athletes, sports and nations Vision Commonwealth sport will be an important and integral part of the Canadian sport system, providing opportunities for developing and high performance athletes to excel. Canada will be poised and prepared to bid to host a Commonwealth Games by 2030. CGC contributes to the development of Commonwealth sport internationally. Values Caring Justice Development CGC Areas of Focus 1. Sport • Sending Team Canada to the Commonwealth Games every 4 years and Commonwealth Youth Games • Working with Canadian NSO’s to contribute to their sport development plans • Hosting the Commonwealth Games and major events in Canada 2. International Development through Sport • Development through Sport is the use of sport as a tool to communicate to a large, unbiased, targeted audience vital HIV/AIDS and health messaging and provide opportunities for social and life-skill development. • Development of Sport enhances sport organizations and systems internationally to ensure local sustainability while increasing sporting performances, opportunities and participation. • IDS implements both internship and partnership programs throughout the Commonwealth. All of the programs have elements of both development of sport and development through sport.
