Fencer Sherraine Mackay, who graduated from the University of Ottawa with a BA in English and a BEd, is the first Canadian to win a medal at the Fencing World Championships.
Mackay took the bronze medal in the women’s epee event on October 10, 2005 in Leipzig, Germany. While Mackay has been a regular medalist at World Cup fencing events, the highest previous finish by her or any Canadian at a world championship was sixth.
MacKay finished 18th in the singles epee and fourth in the women’s team epee at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
Mackay is known in Canada as a fencer and a writer. Her book Running With Swords is a reflective and lighthearted look at her pursuit of the Olympic dream. It was published this fall by Fitzhenry & Whiteside. MacKay has appeared on Canada Reads and The Inside Track on CBC Radio.
