Sudden award surprises student

Raj Dayal

Raj Dayal is congratulated by his father,
Rajendra, and sister Helena after receiving
a Community Builder Award.

Fourth-year uOttawa biochemistry student Raj Dayal received a surprise when awarded the Community Builder Award during the launch of the Ottawa United Way Campaign on September 22.

Dayal was attending the breakfast event at the Congress Centre as a representative of the Ottawa-Carleton Association for Persons with Developmental Disabilities, a United Way-funded agency, where he volunteers. Not only was Dayal asked to accept the award in front of 1,200 people, but he also discovered that his family was present to help him celebrate the occasion.

United Way will present some 50 Community Builder Awards over the three-month campaign. Standard practice is to surprise recipients with an impromptu presentation, usually at their place of work or where they volunteer.

Dayal’s accomplishments include being a volunteer soccer coach for 6-to-13-year-old kids, raising funds for health causes as a participant in a number of community events, volunteering at the Civic and Riverside campuses of the Ottawa Hospital, working with visually impaired kids at Camp Horizons, and helping out at the Canadian Blood Services.
