Lawyer receives honorary doctorate

University professor Elizabeth Sheehy received an honorary doctorate from the Law Society of Upper Canada for her extensive work in defending women’s rights in the courts. Women accounted for 66 per cent of the 187 lawyers called to the bar during the July ceremony.

Professor Sheehy was appointed to the Faculty of Law in 1984. She held the professorship of the Shirley E. Greenberg Chair for Women and the Legal Profession (2002-2005) for its first term. She also developed a course on women and the legal profession, the first of its kind in a Canadian law school.

Sheehy has been involved in many legal and activist endeavours and continues to act as a consultant for women’s groups and national organizations.
