Professor Andrée Durieux-Smith of the School of Rehabilitation Sciences is a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (CASLPA).
Durieux-Smith became an audiologist in 1968. After obtaining her Ph.D. in 1974, she founded the Department of Audiology at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. She founded the University’s audiology and speech-language pathology program in 1993, and is currently the vice- dean of professorial affairs at the Faculty of Health Sciences
One of Durieux-Smith’s most significant contributions was to question the evidence for neonatal screening. She continues to be involved in expert groups on the evaluation and treatment of hearing loss among children.
CASLPA represents some 4,200 speech, language, and hearing professionals across Canada.
