HPCVL increases computing power

The High Performance Computing Virtual Laboratory (HPCVL) is expected to quadruple its current computing power and storage with the acquisition of servers and arrays from Sun Microsystems Inc. The investment is worth $22 million.

The new environment will meet the needs of multiple research groups including in the areas of stem cells, economics, physics and psychology.

HPCVL is a consortium initially made up of four Ontario universities:  uOttawa, Carleton, Queen's and the Royal Military College of Canada. A fifth member, Ryerson University, was added in 2004. The laboratory provides high performance computing to researchers at member institutions and selected researchers from elsewhere in Ontario to conduct innovative research in a broad spectrum of disciplines.
