Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, Canada’s third largest national law firm, hosted a benefit gala and a live and silent auction, on May 30, to raise funds for the General Dallaire Scholarship in International Humanitarian Law. It was held at the new Canadian War Museum.
Lieutenant General Roméo Dallaire and the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law developed the scholarship to enhance Canada’s ability to participate and assist in complex international situations. “International humanitarian law is one of the world’s fastest growing areas of law,” said Bruce Feldthusen, dean of the Common Law Section. “This is an area where Canadian law graduates can make a meaningful contribution to humanity.”
Among the items available for auction were group dinners at the Finnish, Saudi Arabian and United Arab Emirates embassies, a round of golf with former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, an original “red” seat from the Montreal Forum and a hockey stick signed by the 1993 Ottawa Senators.
Dallaire, who was the keynote speaker at the gala, was recently named to Canada’s Senate. He is internationally respected for 35 years of service to the Canadian Armed Forces and for his leadership and courage during the Rwandan genocide tragedy.
