New microscopy laboratory launched

Looking into microscopesThe Department of Earth Sciences recently inaugurated its new teaching microscopy laboratory, whose main components are 18 state-of-the-art Olympus polarizing microscopes.

During the inauguration, visitors to the lab had the chance to compare the performance of the new microscopes with older models.

The lab will be the main teaching facility for the undergraduate geology and geology-physics programs, as well as serving master’s and doctoral students in the department. The facility was made possible through donations by members of the Department, university alumni, and an important contribution by the Carsen Group, the Canadian representatives for the Olympus Corporation.
