Steel structure is teaching tool

The Department of Civil Engineering is now the owner of a structural steel teaching aid, donated by Laplante Welding of Cornwall, a member of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC).

The teaching aid was officially unveiled on March 22 with a number of special guests in attendance, including Suja John (left) from CISC and Walt Hucalak, sales director for Dymin Steel, who is also vice-president of the CISC’s Ontario chapter.

Dymin Steel provided the steel for the structure. Other businesses contributed products or services: Corbec Galvanizing, Eric Lemire Enterprises Inc., MBS Steel Ltd., Regional Crane Rentals and ATA Utility Contractors.

The five-metre-tall structure weighing about 1.5 tons is located near the entrance of Colonel By Hall. The teaching aid was designed to include a variety of structural systems and will provide a visual learning experience for 3rd- and 4th- year students in civil engineering.
