Pushing democratic reform

The Minister responsible for Democratic Reform, Mauril Bélanger, announced plans to move democratic reform forward in the coming weeks during an address he delivered at the University of Ottawa, on February 16.

Bélanger said he would soon meet with his provincial and territorial counterparts and he promised to “involve citizens in this dialogue” through countrywide workshops to address what is and what is not working in Canada’s democratic life. He said he would commission academic research about some key issues facing Canadian democracy and establish a consortium of policy think-tanks bringing together academics and key stakeholders.

The Ottawa-Vanier MP and uOttawa alumnus also announced the launch of the Web site, www.democraticreform.gc.ca, “to serve as a forum to connect and inform Canadians who are interested in democratic renewal.”
