Shave for a cancer cure

Dean Peter Walker, left, along with Chief Administrative Officer Daniel Levac, were among a group of about 20 representatives of the Faculty of Medicine—students, parents, staff members—who had their heads shaved on January 28 in support of the Canadian Cancer Society and research on cancer among children. The "Shave for a Cure" event, held during an Ottawa 67s' hockey game at the Ottawa Civic Centre, was a huge success as $25,000 were raised. Dr. Sophia Hrycko (MD 1993), from the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, played the barber and gave the final sweep of a brush on the newly exposed scalps. Event organizers Stephannie MacDonald and Lesleigh Abbott had issued the challenge to the dean, who literally met it head-on. A clean-cut Dr. Walker later invited Rector Gilles Patry to do the same next year.
