Engineering and Computer Science graduate Ryan Anderson spent two weeks over the Christmas period pretending to live on Mars. Chosen by the Mars Society, Anderson’s adventure in the Utah desert captured the attention of local and national media.
The goal of the project is to accumulate the necessary research to send humans to Mars.
Anderson says that the experience was worth missing Christmas with his family. “I missed them a lot, but the benefits to the future of Mars exploration and to me as an individual makes the sacrifice worthwhile,” he explains. “The station’s crews are developing knowledge that will have a profound, positive impact on future Mars exploration missions. My convictions are stronger than ever that we can safely send humans to Mars, that we should, that we will, and that Canada could fill a leading role.”
