Common Law's “right honourable” homecoming

The moment of truth – As the Honourable Jean-Marc Labrosse (BA 1957, LLB 1960) Justice, Court of Appeal for Ontario pulls on the garnet curtain, portraits of the many jurists who claim the University as their alma mater are revealed.

The Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law held a right honourable homecoming weekend September 20-21 – and we use the term “honourable” very deliberately.

The highlight of the weekend was the unveiling of the charter members of the honour society – distinguished graduates all – as well as a Judges’ Wall, which celebrates the many alumni who have ascended to the bench.

Among the charter members of the honour society were federal cabinet ministers Allan Rock and John Manley (who were unable to attend), as well as Nunavut premier Paul Okalik, Shirley Greenberg, a pioneering lawyer in Ottawa and honorary doctor of the University, businessman Jay Hennick, and Justice Michel Bastarache of the Supreme Court of Canada.

In addition to the two ceremonies, the weekend gave hundreds of graduates the opportunity to socialize and network, as well as to learn about new initiatives at the Faculty. Tours of the new technology law lab, as well as discussions with current faculty members, even prompted graduate Doug Keller Hobson to announce a $50,000 donation to establish a scholarship at the Faculty.

The weekend left Dean Bruce Feldthusen enthused. “So many great things are taking place right now that it’s difficult to know which to celebrate. And Homecoming gives the Faculty a chance to talk about all of these things with both recent graduates and those who have been out of school for some time,” he said.
