Researcher is better than gold

Juan ScaianoFor the second time in less than two years, chemist Juan Cesar “Tito” Scaiano has won a $1-million award recognizing his lifetime research achievements.

Scaiano has just been awarded the Premier’s Platinum Medal for Research Excellence by the Government of Ontario.

“It’s a tremendous honour for me to have been selected,” said Scaiano, who has also won the Herzberg Medal, which is also worth $1 million. That award was presented to him in November 2002 by NSERC.

“Professor Scaiano is clearly one of the top researchers in his field and a recognized leader in the scientific world. This award confirms his well-deserved reputation and serves as an inspiration to all researchers at the University of Ottawa,” said Rector Gilles Patry.

Born in Argentina, Scaiano has been at the University of Ottawa since 1991, and was named Distinguished University Professor in 2000. He has authored or co-authored over 400 articles, and is one of the most quoted research chemists in the world.

Vice-rector, research, Howard Alper – himself a Herzberg Medal winner – says Scaiano’s research and teaching provide a shining example for both faculty and students. “Tito is a remarkably creative thinker and a gifted teacher. We are fortunate to have him here, and I offer my heartiest congratulations for this significant honour for a wonderful colleague.”
