Gee-Gees great Merv Sabey gets special night

Gee-Gees all-time basketball great Merv Sabey was honoured during a pre-game ceremony at Montpetit Hall on February 6, 2004.

Sabey, who came to the University of Ottawa in late 1971 after completing an undergraduate degree at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, was the basketball program’s first and only Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU) All-Canadian, and led the Gee-Gees basketball team through its most successful period.

In Sabey’s final two seasons, 1973-74 and 1974-75, the Gee-Gees made two consecutive appearances at the CIAU Nationals. In those days, sell-out crowds for basketball games at Montpetit Hall were the norm.

Sabey remains one of the top all-time scorers in the history of the program.
