“Research faculty at our great universities must accept that undergraduate teaching is a vital part of their vocation,” says NYU president, Dr. John Sexton. |
Since his appointment last year as President of New York University (NYU), Dr. John Sexton has been a strong advocate of the "common enterprise university" – the idea that universities must consider teaching and community service to be at least as important as research in modern universities.
President Sexton spoke passionately on this subject while delivering the inaugural Canada Post Lecture at the University of Ottawa, on September 9.
This lecture is "the first of what promises to be an exciting series designed to address matters of common concern to both Canada and to the United States, and to enhance dialogue between our two countries," said Rector Gilles Patry, as he welcomed Dr. Sexton.
A renowned legal scholar, John Sexton is author of the most widely used legal text in the United States, and a former dean of NYU’s School of Law. Founded in 1831, NYU is one of the United States’ most prestigious private universities. It teaches over 48,000 students in six locations in Manhattan and 20 foreign countries. Its main campus is located in Greenwich Village.
