World-renowned sociolinguist and professor in the University’s Department of Linguistics, Shana Poplack is among the four most accomplished Ontario researchers to receive a 2008 Premier’s Discovery Award.
At the award ceremony, which took place in Toronto on April 29, Poplack declared: “I’m very honoured to be a recipient of the Premier’s Discovery Award in the Social Sciences and Humanities. I hope that this recognition will garner more visibility for linguists and involve us more in provincial and national decisions about language planning and language policy.”
Poplack studies language as it is actually spoken, especially in bilingual and minority-language contexts. She holds a Canada Research Chair in Linguistics and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. She is a Distinguished University Professor and her many awards and honours include the 2007 Killam Prize and a Trudeau Fellowship Award in 2007.
The Premier’s Discovery Awards celebrate the research excellence of Ontario’s top researchers.
