Pam Hrick, president of the Student Federation of the University of Ottawa (SFUO), came a strong second among the four finalists of the Canada’s Next Great Prime Minister national contest. The program aired on March 23.

Canada’s Next Great Prime Minister is a contest that provides a national forum for young Canadians to put forth innovative proposals for a more prosperous country.

“I feel very fortunate to have been given the chance to discuss issues about which I am passionate with other young people from across the country, as well as with politicians who I’ve respected and admired for many years,” says Hrick, when asked about her experience.

The four finalists — chosen among a shortlist of 10 — faced a jury comprising three former Canadian prime ministers and a premier: the right honourables Kim Campbell, Paul Martin, and John Turner, as well as the premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, Danny Williams.

A true politician in the making, Pam Hrick stayed on message throughout the program, highlighting the importance of access and affordability of post-secondary education and her commitment to environmental issues.

“I certainly hope to continue being involved in politics in the years to come. It’s hard to believe I now have a tape of Paul Martin saying that I’ll be a great prime minister. I’m not sure many people my age have received that kind of endorsement,” says Hrick. “I’ll be sure to hold onto that in case I ever make a run at the real PMO!”

After a close race with Pam Hrick winning two of four polls, the final round saw Alika Lafontaine, a 25-year-old Métis physician from Saskatchewan, selected as the winner.
