University welcomes Inuit law students

Rector Gilles Patry and Dean Bruce Feldthusen chat with Inuit law students Susan Enuaraq and Sandra Inutiq at a reception welcoming the participants in the Akitsiraq Law School to the University of Ottawa. The reception, sponsored by Nelligan O'Brien Payne LLP, was attended by Nunavuk Premier Paul Okalik who is a graduate of the University of Ottawa and currently the only Inuk lawyer in Nunavut.

Sixteen Inuit students of the Akitsiraq Law School have spent the first three weeks of January in Ottawa, participating in the winter term of the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law, Common Law Section.

The Akitsiraq Law School is a unique program designed to train a group of Inuit lawyers to work in Nunavut. The students “southern visit” is sponsored by Nelligan O’Brien Payne LLP, the Department of Justice, the Walter and Duncan Gordon Foundation, the Maurice Price Foundation and the University of Ottawa.
