Mathieu Laperle, Manager, Food Services

What is your most important function at the University? Why?

For nearly two years, my team and I have been supervising food services on campus. In the last few years, the food service industry has evolved in a way that reflects our society. Nowadays, students want the same products and services on campus as off campus. We must also consider the various concerns of our clients with respect to the environment, recycling, diversity in the food supply (halal food, vegetarian food) and nutrition for health. We had to develop and renew the current supply.

In the last two years, we have created a new image, launched a Web site, renovated the University Centre Food Court and Café Alibi in Fauteux Hall, opened a Starbucks in the Desmarais Building and a Second Cup in the Morisset Library, and much more. The result: we noted an increase in the number of patrons and we are improving our chances of keeping our clients on the University of Ottawa’s campus.

What inspires you the most about your job?

I work in an organization where I can be creative and, if applicable, take reasonable chances. What I am primarily looking for is challenge; I avoid routine. I am used to working in environments where the clientele is diverse and where the need for services changes regularly.

What moment in your life gave you the most pride?

Professionally, what made me most proud was the opportunity to live a European experience. I had the chance of meeting wonderful people. In my personal life, what I am the most proud of is my immediate family and close friends. The balance between my work and personal life (especially with my young family) is essential for me.

What is your favourite hobby?

Outdoor recreation, reading and cooking

Where do you see yourself in the next five years?

On vacation at Christmas in Argentina!
