As the third-highest donor in the region, the University of Ottawa’s reputation among United Way circles is a tough one to beat. Last year’s campaign raised $409,000 surpassing the target goal of $365,000. This year, the University has an even more ambitious target of $415,000. “We are true leaders in the Ottawa community, which has allowed us to increase and more than meet our goal from year to year,” says Denis Cossette, uOttawa United Way Campaign co-chair and director of Financial Services.

The average uOttawa donation in 2006 was $295 with an exceptional 54 per cent participation rate. “We can be immensely proud of this record, especially when you consider that the average for the education sector as a whole was 37 per cent,” adds Professor Jeff Keshen, campaign co-chair and manager of the Experiential Learning Service.

This year’s campaign kicked off on October 9 and runs until November 19. It features any number of ways to allow you to contribute to the United Way. Check the website regularly to learn about special events, to promote campus fundraising events or to make a donation.

One of the most popular events is the talent show, which will take place on November 15. “We are seeing far more student involvement in the campaign with SFUO helping, along with Community Life, to spearhead the talent show,” says Keshen.

For co-chairs Cossette and Keshen, the campaign is a perfect fit for the University’s community involvement. “The campaign is so important for the student and University community. With the University’s Student Aid Fund included in the United Way campaign for the first time last year, more than $35,000 was distributed directly to students,” says Cossette.

Each dollar you give really makes a major difference in the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in our community, such as children, the elderly, those without shelter, and many others who need and can benefit so much from a helping hand,” adds Keshen. “When we help United Way, we help everyone by building a stronger, more caring and humane community.”
