On September 13 at the University of Ottawa, television host and comedian Rick Mercer (centre) launched a national challenge to all Canadian university students, faculty and staff. Mercer is the co-founder of Spread the Net, the anti-malarial bed net fundraising initiative, which raises funds to buy bed nets for African children that will help protect them from malaria, their number one killer.
The University was the first Canadian institution to take up the Spread the Net Campus Challenge. Mercer was joined by UNICEF Canada President and CEO Nigel Fisher, SFUO President Pam Hrick, Vice-President of University Relations Bruce Feldthusen, and Gee-Gee’s captain and quarterback Josh Sacobie, and several of his team mates.
