Salah Basalamah, assistant professor, School of Translation and Interpretation

What is your most important function at the University?

The constant effort to review conventional wisdom with ethics as guide. It is the only guarantor of freedom of thought that can be used without losing one's bearings.

What inspires you the most in your work?

The magic of understanding. When the students grasp what you are striving to make them understand, feel, grasp.

How did you become interested in your field of research?

Going back to what I am: a natural translator, and how this merges with my societal interests.

What are you the most proud of?

The gratitude shown by the students, when it is shown, and the freedom to express my identity without a second thought in a university framework and as a complement to my social commitment.

If you had the power, what would you change in the world today?

The power relationship of money that corrupts the world of education to a high degree.

What is your favourite pastime?

Reading.

What is your greatest hope for the future?

To see the development of an intercultural cooperation network to meet social challenges and reform Canada's political landscape.
