Law Society re-elects Constance Backhouse and Joanne St. Lewis

Constance Backhouse, distinguished university professor and university research chair, and Joanne St. Lewis, assistant law professor, have both been re-elected as Benchers of the Law Society of Upper Canada for the next four years. This year, 18 of the 40 elected benchers are women, the highest number of women elected in Law Society history.

Benchers formulate policy on matters related to the governance of the legal profession. They also participate on Law Society committees and sit on hearing panels to hear conduct, capacity and competence proceedings.

They join former treasurer of the Law Society Professor Vern Krishna, who was elected to serve as a Life Bencher this term.
