The University of Ottawa campus will become a terminal for Ottawa’s new light rail transit (LRT) system when the north-south line of the new system is built on university land, at the corner of Stewart Street and Waller Street.

“We are happy to be working with the city to make Light Rail Transit a viable and effective mode of transportation for our citizens and the University community,” said President Gilles Patry.

The agreement will see a 390-space, three-storey underground parking facility built on the site below the LRT station. Heritage properties currently on the site will be preserved during and after the building process.

“As a downtown university, public transit is a crucial part of our campus,” said Victor Simon, vice-president, resources of the University. “We are proud to be part of this new initiative.”

The agreement will allow both the University of Ottawa and Carleton University to benefit from the expanded LRT system.

While the possibility of constructing a university building above the LRT station exists, the University has not yet decided whether to build or what it would build there. Whatever building decisions are made, the LRT station will be ready for the opening of the first phase of the project in 2009.
