Chemistry professor Juan Cesar “Tito” Scaiano was appointed as an officer of the Order of Canada during a ceremony at the Governor General’s residence in Ottawa, on February 17, 2006.
One of Canada’s most eminent chemists, Scaiano received the Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal in 2002 and the Premier’s Platinum Medal for Research Excellence in 2004 - two of the world’s most prestigious research awards worth $1 million each. He used part of these awards to establish an endowment fund in 2004 for science students working on their PhDs.
Scaiano received the Distinguished University Professor Award in 2000 and holds the Canada Research Chair in Applied Photochemistry.
