Andr� Marcoux is an audiologist by training who has worked as a clinician and as the director of a private clinic in the Ottawa region. After completing his Doctorate in Experimental Psychology at Carleton University, he moved to Copenhagen, Denmark where he was hired as a pediatric specialist by Widex, a company involved in hearing aid research and development. His research work yielded innovations in instrumentation design and in the acquisition of knowledge on deaf newborns and young children. He has presented his research findings in more than 20 different countries and has, during his foreign travels, trained several professionals interested in improving quality of life from birth for children with hearing impairments and their families. Professor Marcoux has held an assistant professorship in the University of Ottawa�s Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Program since 2004 and he is a researcher affiliated with the Children�s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute.

Dr. Marcoux will travel to Zambia to intervene with hearing-impaired children, a common complication of meningitis and encephalitis due to HIV-AIDS. The intervention is imperative in light of the fact that verbal communication is the only effective of contact with society. Currently, children with hearing-impairment in Zambia and other select sub-Saharan African countries are shunned by society and are left to live in isolation. Dr. Marcoux and his team will evaluate hearing function in children, provide solar-powered hearing instruments to those most in need of amplification and educate local teams to assist in care and rehabilitation efforts geared specifically for these children.
