Students – Community Partners Details

COMMUNITY PARTNER INFORMATION:
Organization:
Aga Khan Education Board for Ottawa
Description:
The Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims, generally known as the Ismailis, reside in over 25 countries including India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada to name a few. The Ismaili Muslim community’s diversity is a microcosm of the Islamic world, which in itself comprises many communities with differing tariqah (interpretations) and cultural traditions. Like all Muslims, the Ismailis are monotheistic and affirm that Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) was the last in a line of prophets that includes Moses and Jesus. Members of the Ismaili community, who began arriving in Ottawa in the 1960’s, have established strong roots in Ottawa and occupy a variety of positions in various sectors of business, commerce, government and the professions. As in other major centres of Ismaili settlement in Canada, the social governance of the Community is administered by the regional Aga Khan Council The Aga Khan Council for Ottawa’s role is to ensure the enhancement of the quality of life of the Ismaili Muslim community through administration, guidance, coordination and development of appropriate policies and programs in areas such as education, health, social welfare, economic welfare, culture, women's activities, and youth and sports development. The Council also strives to enable members of our community to make a valid and meaningful contribution to Ottawa society, in general.
