Students – Community Partners Details

COMMUNITY PARTNER INFORMATION:
Organization:
Initiative un monde à partager / Shared World Initiative
Description:
The Initiative Un Monde a Partager - Shared World Initiative is a multi-disciplinary program under the University of Ottawa, Health Services, managed by the Health Promotion Department and is affiliated with the Faculty of Health Sciences. Shared World is a student-led initiative that promotes international development based on a philosophy of community-based rehabilitation. We have a grassroots approach to developing viable and sustainable projects which operate at the core of the targeted community's basic needs. This program represents our response, as university students, upon noticing students general lack of hands-on fieldwork experience after graduating from their programs of study. As such, our primary aim is to provide students with an opportunity to gain experience in developing international development projects from scratch, and in ultimately implementing them abroad. Shared World operates through two distinct but interrelated components: 1. Seminars and project creation; 2. Project implementation abroad. The program is multi-disciplinary. Students from all faculties and backgrounds are encouraged to participate. Fulfilling our goals will require coordination, expertise, networking, and most importantly a strong team. As such, we need participants that are autonomous, dependable, creative, and committed. The Shared World community service learning placement will last three months (though 8 weeks abroad in Africa, either Zambia or Benin. The participating students will choose a position that will allow them to actively participate in the development of Shared World's structure and network.
