Students – Community Partners Details

COMMUNITY PARTNER INFORMATION:
Organization:
uOttawa -Department of Biology & Institute of the Environment (Prof. Scott Findlay)
Description:
Over the past six years, Prof. Scott Findlay and several colleagues at the University of Ottawa have been engaged in a set of “second order (synthetic) science” projects, all of which use student volunteers to assist in the collection of data – not from the field or in the laboratory, but from documents. The program solicits student’s assistance in populating databases that have been specifically constructed for particular projects. Database population requires students to: (a) retrieve a list of articles, most of which are available through the University’s electronic journal databases, or articles/reports that are provided by the particular project’s database manager; (b) read the articles; and (c) extract information from the articles/reports and input these data into a database that you will be provided with, using instructions that will be provided. Students will be given a training session in which the project objectives and methods will be explained by the project research coordinator.
