Students – Community Partners Details

COMMUNITY PARTNER INFORMATION:
Organization:
Samara
Description:
Samara is a charitable organization whose programs seek to strengthen Canada’s democracy. Just over a year ago, and in partnership with the Canadian Association of Former Parliamentarians, we initiated Canada’s first-ever systematic series of exit interviews with former Members of Parliament. This project is motivated by the belief that Parliament matters, that MPs are important, and that democracy is well served through strong public institutions that are well-understood, supported and appreciated. To date we have released two reports, “The Accidental Citizen?,” which shares the MPs’ backgrounds and paths to politics, and “Welcome to Parliament: The Job With No Description,” which highlights how MPs’ transition to public life, and how they describe the role of a Member of Parliament. Both reports received extensive national media coverage and have provoked new conversations on Canada’s politics. We hope these conversations will draw attention to the things that function well in our public life, and to contribute to a constructive discourse on what can be improved. We are preparing further reports for release in the new year.
