Ottawa-Shanghai Joint School of Medicine: From students to white-coats

OTTAWA, October 16, 2015  —  The University of Ottawa is celebrating the one-year anniversary of the creation of the Ottawa-Shanghai Joint School of Medicine with a white coat ceremony in Shanghai and the launch of the Ottawa-Shanghai Academic Family Health Team.

Representatives from uOttawa will be in Shanghai on October 17 (local time), to attend a White Coat Ceremony at which 56 students, recruited from all regions of China, will receive their white coat, symbolizing their official entry into medicine.

“The ceremony is designed for the students to publicly affirm their commitment and make an oath of professionalism at the outset of their training in medicine. It’s a ceremonial tradition honoured by many medical schools around the world, including our partner in China, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine,” says Yuwei Wang, assistant dean of Internationalization at the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicine.

In Shanghai, the uOttawa Faculty of Medicine and Shanghai Jiao Tong University will also announce the establishment of the new Ottawa-Shanghai Academic Family Health Team (AFMT), a Canadian-style family medicine clinic  which will serve as a teaching environment for both Canadian and Chinese students—a first in China.

“The family medicine discipline currently doesn’t exist in China, but Chinese health care leaders are pursuing the introduction of this primary care model with the creation of the AFMT. Located at Renji Hospital in Shanghai, the family medicine clinic will act as a pilot project in China for the eventual development of a broader family medicine sector of primary care in that country,” says Dr. Jacques Bradwejn, dean of the uOttawa Faculty of Medicine.
