OTTAWA, August 31, 2015  —  The University of Ottawa will come alive again this fall, as new and returning students settle in for the academic year. For some, this will be an entirely new experience, and perhaps the first time away from home. For others, it marks the beginning of new goals and projects.

This year, as always, the University has ensured that students feel welcome and supported, both at the start of the new session and all year long.

Buzzing with events, Welcome Week kicks things off for students, along rest of the University community. To improve the student experience all year long, the University is pleased to offer students two new residences and innovative new courses.

Welcome Week

New residences

Over the past twelve months, the Housing Service has added around 1,000 beds. Students will be moving into two new residences, in addition to the Friel residence (opened in September 2014), Labour Day weekend:

• The Rideau residence has been converted from a hotel. It will house 414 students. Located in the downtown core and a short walk from campus, this residence offers newly renovated common spaces on the ground floor, including a student lounge, full kitchen facilities and a laundry room.
• The Henderson residence will offer a new, modern design for students. Amenities include shared kitchens and a common space on each floor, as well as a larger common room to accommodate residence-wide programming. The residence also features a green roof.

Celebrate the start of the school year with the University of Ottawa’s first urban picnic on the Tabaret lawn. On tap for this summer rendezvous: food trucks, Slushies and music by Beat Market.

President’s Brunch

Sunday, September 6
9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Tabaret lawn

Allan Rock, president and vice-chancellor, invites parents, students and friends of the University to a Sunday brunch. They will be officially welcomed to the campus at this special event. Representatives from the faculties and services will be onsite to answer questions, and the University’s Community Life Service will present information sessions just for parents.

Innovative classes

New and returning students alike can enjoy a variety of classes offered in English and French by the University. Here is a glimpse of classes that defy the conventional:

• Entrepreneurship Foundry: A course that links arts, engineering and management students.
• Italy at Your Fingertips: Italy is closer than ever with this course that offers theory as well as Skype conversations in Italian with someone in Italy.
• Sleep and Dreams: Study dream functions, dream recall, dream analysis, sleep disorders, adaptation to stress and more.
• The Sound of Rock: Develop your analytical and listening skills while studying the sound and history of rock music.
