Celebrating 20 years of health collaboration between Canada and China

OTTAWA, May 14, 2015  —  Canada and China will mark 20 years of health collaboration with a special ceremonyat the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicineon Friday, May 15, at 1 p.m.  This event, held in partnership with the Embassy of China and Health Canada, will bring together officials and medical professionals from both countries.

For the past two decades, Canada and China have established a close relationship in the health care field, as exemplified by last fall’s announcement of a partnership between Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicine to create the first Sino-Canadian joint medical school. The Ottawa-Shanghai Joint Medical School brings uOttawa’s four-year medical education (MD) program to China and will provide for exchanges and collaborative research projects between the two universities.

“From the outset, both Shanghai Jiao Tong School of Medicine and our Faculty were seeking a preferred partner with whom to invest jointly in support of a multifaceted partnership to meet our goals of contributing to health reform in China, expanding research and learning opportunities, and improving health services in Canada,” said Dr. Jacques Bradwejn, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.

The event will also formally establish collaboration between The Ottawa Hospital and Renji Hospital in Shanghai with an official agreement signed by Ottawa Hospital president Dr. Jack Kitts and Renji Hospital president Dr. Weiping Li.

“The partnership between The Ottawa Hospital and Shanghai’s Renji Hospital is a component of the broader partnership of the Ottawa-Shanghai Joint Medical School that will allow for expanded specialty training, innovative projects in clinical settings and health reform,”  said Dr. Bradwejn.

A photo exhibition highlighting diplomacy through health collaboration and the international partnerships between China and Canada will also be on display at the Faculty of Medicine. The exhibition has been organized in honour of a special visit from Qian Liu, China’s Vice-Minister of the National Health and Family Planning Commission.

The event will be held on Friday, May 15, at 1 p.m. Media wishing to attend are encouraged to contact the Media Relations Office.
