University of Ottawa to offer unique PhD in Communication program
OTTAWA, May 13, 2015 — The University of Ottawa Department of Communication is proud to announce the establishment of a PhD in Communication program. The program, unique in Ontario, is fully bilingual. Its purpose is to educate highly skilled researchers and experts able to reflect on situations in their complexity.
“The world of communications is in a state of flux, as can be seen in the many complex issues that digital media, information technologies, public relations, crisis management and social innovation raise. The role of communications researchers, experts and specialists is crucial in understanding and analyzing the impact of these issues on society, and on individuals as they relate to others,” says Luc Bonneville, Department of Communication chair of graduate studies.
The program is structured around two main areas: media studies and organizational communication, areas where the University’s faculty are recognized as world experts.
The University of Ottawa is the only Canadian university to offer a bilingual PhD in communication at a single institution. This unique feature promises an unparalleled intellectual experience. Students can benefit from close contact with bilingual faculty as well as from research in both languages.
Using different approaches, theories and concepts, students in the program will be able to develop an understanding of social, political, economic and cultural issues in society, in order to propose appropriate, long-term action. They will develop their critical thinking, as well as their ability to reflect on and solve problems affecting society, while contributing to the progress of knowledge in the field.
Students will be able to apply for admission beginning this October, with courses starting in September 2016.
