Launch of largest fundraising campaign and new home for alumni: A sneak peek at uOttawa's Alumni Week
OTTAWA, April 29, 2015 — University of Ottawa alumni around the world are defying the conventional, redefining the debate and making their alma mater proud. To salute their achievements uOttawa is holding Alumni Week, May 4 to 9. The University will host thousands of people taking part in some 30 events.
In addition to highlighting uOttawa alumni, the week will feature the inauguration of the new Alumni Hall, world-renowned speakers, lectures, class reunions, family activities (including the Food Truck Rally), a celebration of the University’s 50th anniversary as a public institution and the launch of the University’s largest-ever fundraising campaign, all in a way that will defy the conventional.

Alumni Hall inauguration
Destined to become a favourite meeting place on campus, the brand new Alumni Hall will be the uOttawa’s first dedicated space to welcome alumni. Alumni, faculty and staff will gather at the opening ceremony wearing their garnet and grey school colours to proclaim University of Ottawa Alumni Week. Details to follow soon.

The World in an Age of Terrorism
Among the most notable speakers during the week will be New York Times columnist and bestselling author Thomas L. Friedman, who will launch the Alex Trebek Distinguished Lecture series with a talk entitled “The World in an Age of Terrorism: Balancing Freedom and Security.” Author of The World Is Flat and The Lexus and the Olive Tree, Thomas Friedman is a three-time Pulitzer Prize winner known for his thought-provoking analysis of complex issues.

Defy the Conventional Gala
The highlight of Alumni Week will certainly be the Defy the Conventional Gala, which will launch uOttawa’s most ambitious fundraising campaign and mark the University’s 50th year as a public institution. With a goal of $400 million, Defy the Conventional: the Campaign for uOttawa will set the stage for the University’s future. The gala will be the largest ever on campus and an impressive structure will be built on the lawn of Tabaret Hall for the event.
Law and Social Media
The digital age has pushed the boundaries of communication, which is quicker and more efficient than ever before. But in the vast ocean of cyberspace, concepts such as intellectual property and privacy can become diluted. This lecture will explore social networks and their uncharted legal waters.
Food Truck Rally
Food trucks will gather on campus as part of the free Alumni Week Food Truck Rally. It will feature a variety of foods sure to set your mouth watering, from barbecue to vegetarian delights and even gluten-free selections.
Celebrating the 75th volume of the Fulcrum
The campus’ English-language student newspaper, The Fulcrum,will publish its 75th volume this year. To celebrate this journalistic feat, all those involved with the student newspaper over the years are invited to a reception in honour of past contributors to the Fulcrum.
