MEDIA ADVISORY: Je Suis Scholar: Scholars at Risk Program Panel Discussion

OTTAWA, February 26, 2015  —  Carleton University and the University of Ottawa invite members of the media to Je Suis Scholar, a panel discussion launching the Scholars at Risk (SAR) program. The panel will feature a conversation with two current SAR scholars, Farai Gonzo and Baktybek Beshimov and will take place at Carleton University.

Carleton University and the University of Ottawa have partnered to become members of the SAR program. SAR is an international network of higher education institutions dedicated to protecting threatened scholars, preventing attacks on higher education communities and promoting academic freedom worldwide. These goals are primarily achieved by arranging positions of sanctuary at institutions for those forced to flee.

About Farai Gonzo
Gonzo is a Zimbabwean journalist and academic with more than 10 years of experience in radio, television and online media. She was the executive producer of current affairs programming at a major media outlet in Zimbabwe and a lecturer at the Zimbabwe Open University. Gonzo fled to Canada after being jailed and tortured for her writing. She is currently teaching at Centennial College while pursuing her PhD at the University of Toronto.

About Baktybek Beshimov
From 1998 to 2009, Beshimov led an opposition faction in the parliament of Kyrgyzstan and was appointed ambassador to the Embassy of the Kyrgyz Republic in four South Asian countries. An adjunct professor at Northeastern University, he was previously a visiting scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Center for International Studies and at Harvard University’s Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies.
