MEDIA ADVISORY: Aboriginal Rights & Refusing Life-Saving Treatment for Children

The Human Rights Research and Education Centre and the Centre for Health Law, Policy & Ethics of the University of Ottawa invite members of the media to assist a conference titled Aboriginal Rights & Refusing Life-Saving Treatment for Children.
On November 14, an Ontario judge dismissed a hospital’s application, seeking to have a 11-year-old aboriginal girl taken from her parents to resume chemotherapy for leukemia—finding that First Nations people have a constitutional right to pursue traditional medicine. Some have hailed the decision as a landmark affirmation of aboriginal rights. Others have denounced it as a spectacular failure in the protection of child welfare. This panel discussion will explore the decision’s implications from the standpoint of family law, aboriginal law, and religious freedom.
