MEDIA ADVISORY: Launch of Makerspace: a free DIY hub to “invent-design-build”
OTTAWA, November 19, 2014 — The University of Ottawa invites members of the media to the launch of its Makerspace, a hub for do-it-yourself projects, the Maker movement and entrepreneurship. During the event, a community-wide contest will be launched inviting participants to create a 3D printed hand prosthesis for a six-year-old boy, who will choose his favourite entry next March.

WHEN: Thursday, November 20, 2014. Tour and demos at 5:30 p.m., presentation and announcement at 6:00 p.m.
Makerspace has lots of 3D printers, CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines for precision cutting, machining, drilling and carving, and Arduino/Galileo boards to simplify the application of interactive objects or environments for hobbyists, students and professionals. Over 500 participants have taken part in 19 workshops at Makerspace since it opened this September.
Makerspace is a free, student-run space open to everyone, including staff, professors, alumni and members of the community. The goal is to bring people together to “invent-design-build.”
