MEDIA ADVISORY: Conference on protecting the Victims of Human Trafficking in Canada and Europe

OTTAWA, October 15, 2014  —  The Centre for International Policy Studies of the University of Ottawa, in collaboration with the embassies of Austria and Switzerland in Canada, invites members of the media to attend a conference to highlight the challenges faced by victims of human trafficking. Each year, thousands of individuals become victims of human trafficking and are sent to work in the agricultural, service, construction and sex industries. This conference, which will bring together European and Canadian experts, NGO workers and government representatives, aims to raise awareness of human trafficking and the challenges faced by its victims.

WHEN:  October 16, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The conference will be attended by both Ruth Pojman, the OSCE Deputy Co-ordinator for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings, and Petya Nestorova, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings of the Council of Europe. MP Joy Smith, along with various government, NGO and academic experts, will provide a Canadian perspective.
