MEDIA ADVISORY: Celebrating 165 new Faculty of Medicine graduates

OTTAWA, May 15, 2014  —  The University of Ottawa invites members of the media to attend the Faculty of Medicine’s Ceremony of Professional Engagement and Convocation. Once again, an overwhelming majority of the 165 new uOttawa MDs, nearly fifty per cent, will be entering the discipline of family medicine. An even larger number of graduates, 68 per cent, have chosen to stay and practice in Ontario.

The 2014 graduates will join a family of more than 7,000 Faculty of Medicine alumni who play a key role in addressing health care issues that affect our local communities and finding solutions for the betterment of the population.

WHEN: Friday, May 16, 2014, at 2 p.m.
WHERE: 55 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa Convention Centre

The Faculty will present an honorary doctorate to Dr. Joseph B. Martin, Dean Emeritus of Harvard University and the Edward R. and Anne G. Lefler Distinguished Professor of Neurobiology. Dr. Martin, an MD/PhD, helped to identify a biomarker that led to the location of the gene for Huntington’s disease. Appointed Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Harvard Medical School in 1997, Dr. Martin led the efforts to redesign the entire medical school curriculum and helped create the, bringing together seven Harvard-affiliated institutions for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of cancer. He also formed the Harvard Center for Neurodegeneration and Repair, a decentralized community of over 500 neurology and neuroscientist faculty members and researchers.
