uOttawa to Open a New 400-space Residence in September 2014

OTTAWA, May 13, 2014  —  In September, uOttawa students will benefit from some 400 additional spaces in a new residence building located within a 10-minute walk of campus. The new residence will provide students with a structured residential experience that helps ease their transition to university.

The University of Ottawa is in the process of entering into a long term agreement to lease an existing property located at the intersection of Rideau and Friel streets. The eight-story building will feature single and double rooms, several common areas, kitchen and laundry facilities and storage space.

The University will be the sole manager of this new residence and student occupants will benefit from the same structure and support services available in all other uOttawa Housing Service residences, including community advisors, study groups, 24/7 reception desks and security services.Students living in this new residence will also have access to all the University’s campus-based resources, such as mentoring, counselling and academic support services.

“The creation of additional spaces in residence reflects our ongoing commitment to improving the student experience,” said Marc Joyal, the Vice-President, Resources. “The opening of this new residence is a real hat trick: it’s a plus for students, a plus for the University, and a plus for the community.”

News of the opening of the Rideau-Friel residence is the second housing announcement the University has made over the past few months. In February, the University unveiled its plans to build a new, 170-space residence on Henderson Avenue. Both housing initiatives will go a long way towards helping the University reach its goal of creating some 1200 new residence spaces in the coming years.
