MEDIA ADVISORY: uOttawa students prove compassion counts

OTTAWA, April 28, 2014  —  uOttawa students are springing into action by volunteering with the Ottawa Community Housing Corporation (OCH), one of the new partners of the University of Ottawa’s Centre for Global and Community Engagement. The Centre (CGCE) and OHC both look forward to building a successful long-term relationship.

This partnership not only benefits the community but also provides invaluable experience for students. “Our hope is that through this and other extracurricular volunteering initiatives, students can give back to the community, meet other students and members of the community as well as gain important skills,” says Stéphane Sophie Cardinal, director of CGCE.

“We are delighted to welcome uOttawa students to our volunteer program,” adds Stéphane Giguère, CEO of OCH. “The students are providing an invaluable service to our tenants, contributing to a sense of pride that can have an enduring influence. This is a new partnership that we hope will continue to thrive for many years.”

The Community Revitalizationinitiatives involveprojects implemented by groups of students and led by a student team leader. The first initiative will consist of painting the hallways and common areas of an apartment building that is home to 42 residents. Future projects may include community gardens, health awareness campaigns, mural paintingand beautification projects.

Members of the media are invited to attend the kick-off ceremony celebrating this new partnership.

Mayor Jim Watson, Councillor Marianne Wilkinson (Chair of the OCH Board of Directors), Councillor Mathieu Fleury, Stéphane Sophie Cardinal (University of Ottawa) and Stéphane Giguère (CEO of Ottawa Community Housing) will be in attendance.
