University of Ottawa reveals plans for new student residence
OTTAWA, February 18, 2014 — As part of its ongoing efforts to improve the student experience, the University of Ottawa will invest more than $17.5 million in a new student residence. This project is part of the University’s Destination 2020 strategic plan, and will help attract, host and keep the best students in the nation’s capital.
The University’s plans revealed today are for a four-storey residence on Henderson Avenue, behind the future Advanced Research Complex. It will include 169 single rooms, a kitchen on each floor and common spaces on the ground floor.
“Living in residence is one of the key elements in the rewarding experience we want to offer our students,” said Marc Joyal, vice-president, resources. “That’s why we’re investing the money and effort needed to increase the number of places so more students can live in residence.”
As in its other residences, the University will offer an array of support services for students living in the new building. Students will also be able to take advantage of all the resources the University offers on campus, such as mentoring, counselling and academic support.
“A student residence is more than a place to sleep and eat. Research shows that students who live on campus have more chances to meet other students, find the resources to help them succeed academically and personally, and better integrate into the university community,” said Joyal.
Work should begin in early summer. Building this new residence on Henderson Avenue will help the University meet its goal of adding nearly 1,000 places in residence over the coming years, in addition to the current 3,000 places.
