UN deputy secretary-general, McGill former principal join 1,000 uOttawa grads for Fall 2013 Convocation

OTTAWA, October 31, 2013  —  The University of Ottawa will honour two distinguished personalities and celebrate the accomplishments of more than 1,000 students at its 2013 Fall Convocation. Graduates will receive their diplomas from Allan Rock, president and vice-chancellor of the University of Ottawa.

His Excellency Mister Jan Eliasson, deputy secretary-general of the United Nations, and Dr. Heather Munroe-Blum, former principal and vice-chancellor of McGill University, will receive honorary doctorates.

A class president will deliver a valedictory address to each ceremony’s graduating cohort. The title of class president is given to students who demonstrate commitment to the community and have exemplary academic records.

Ceremonies and honorary doctorate recipients 
Note: Honorary doctorate recipients will speak approximately 30 minutes after the start of the ceremony.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 3

9:30 a.m.: Ceremony I — Faculty of Social Sciences 

On March 2, 2012, Mr. Jan Eliasson was appointed Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Mr. Eliasson was the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Darfur from 2007-2008. Prior to this, he served as President of the 60th session of the UN General Assembly. He was Sweden’s Ambassador to the U.S. from September 2000 until July 2005. In March 2006, Mr. Eliasson was appointed Foreign Minister of Sweden and served in this capacity until the elections in the fall of 2006. He also served as State Secretary for Foreign Affairs from 1994 to 2000. Mr. Eliasson was Sweden’s Ambassador to the UN in New York from 1988 to 1992, and also served as the Secretary-General’s Personal Representative for Iran/Iraq.

Mr. Eliasson was the first UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and was involved in operations in Africa and the Balkans. He was responsible for initiatives on landmines, conflict prevention and humanitarian action.


2:30 p.m.: Ceremony II — Telfer School of Management and faculties of Engineering, Medicine, Science and Health Sciences

Heather Munroe-Blum
, PhD, OC, OQ, FRSC,is an accomplished university administrator and distinguished scholar in the fields of psychiatric epidemiology and public policy.  She served as the 16th Principal (President) and Vice-Chancellor of McGill University (2003-13), the first woman to hold this position, and as Vice-President (Research and International Relations) of the University of Toronto (1994-2002). Dr. Munroe-Blum has authored or co-authored more than 60 scholarly publications, including four books, and has been a strong advocate for universities as vehicles to advance countries’ international competitiveness and enrich societies. She is a Specially Elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and an Officer of the Order of Canada, and also served on the boards and advisory committees of numerous Canadian and international not-for-profit and for-profit organizations and corporations.

7:30 p.m.: Ceremony III — Faculties of Arts, Law and Education, and Saint Paul University
