Concussion guidelines to help adults manage persistent symptoms, resume life
OTTAWA, September 24, 2013 — A new set of guidelines, published today by the Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation (ONF), will help primary healthcare providers treat and manage post-concussion symptoms. The symptoms can persist for months after injury, in adults over 18 years of age. The lead author, Dr. Shawn Marshall, is a professor of medicine at the University of Ottawa and a physician at the Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre.
In Ontario, as many as 16,000 of the estimated 80,000 people who suffer from concussions every year experience lingering and troublesome symptoms for more than three months (2004 data). The guidelines include ways for physicians and other clinicians to objectively evaluate, monitor and manage symptoms.
