OTTAWA, September 10, 2013  —  Students who are environmental leaders and those enrolled in courses with an environmental component will receive direct financial aid thanks to the University of Ottawa’s TD Green Bursaries and The Centre for Global and Community Engagement’s Environmental Leadership Program.

TD Bank Group announced this morning that it has pledged $750,000 towards a fund that will allow the University of Ottawa to provide scholarships and financial support to 50 students over the next ten years. Of this amount, $500,000 will be allocated to the TD Green Bursaries, a program that supports students who are passionate about environmental issues. The remaining $250,000 will support the Centre for Global and Community Engagement’s Environmental Leadership Program, which aims to strengthen the leadership skills of students who address environmental issues and challenges in local communities.

“The commitment of TD Bank Group to support our community-minded students to pursue their passion for sustainability in an eco-friendly environment is very inspiring,” says Christian Detellier, Vice-President, Academic and Provost at the University of Ottawa. “This engagement will not only benefit the recipients, but will also have an impact on our environment, making a lasting difference for generations to come.”

Since 2004, 50 TD Green Bursaries have been awarded to deserving University of Ottawa students from a variety of faculties enrolled in a wide selection of courses that feature a strong sustainability component.

“I can attest to the fact that this bursary has helped me through school” says Annalise Mathers, a third-year honours biomedical sciences student and TD Green Bursary recipient. “It enables students like me to dream big and achieve even bigger.”

Mathers’appreciation for the environment began at an early age as she learned about trees and soil management on her family’s woodlot.This appreciation motivates her “to encourage others to be conscious of their actions and to remember that every effort and every individual can act as the change they want to see in our world.” Based on her recent travels to South America, she suggests that “we need to start reusing what we have without harming the Earth.”
