University of Ottawa research excellence recognized: leading researcher appointed to Montfort Hospital position

OTTAWA, July 2, 2013  —  Once again, the University of Ottawa is in the spotlight thanks to its outstanding researchers. Dr. Denis Prud’homme, full professor in the School of Human Kinetics and former dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, today became the new  associate vice-president research and scientific director of the Institut de recherche de l’Hôpital Montfort (IRHM), the research arm of the Montfort Hospital.

Dr. Prud’homme is recognized for his leadership, commitment and expertise in interdisciplinary health research. He will use his experience as a researcher and clinician to help IRHM researchers carry out their innovative and competitive research programs, in an interprofessional setting.

“I’m pleased to join the team at the Montfort Hospital, which was recently designated an academic health science centre by the Ontario government. With this designation, I’m happy to be able to offer concrete support to researchers to help them develop and realize research programs in their own disciplines, as well as interdisciplinary research, and thus, contribute not only to improving the quality of health care for our community, but also enhance the training of future Francophone researchers and health professionals,” said  Prud’homme.

Prud’homme succeeds Dr.  Andrée Durieux-Smith, emeritus professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences. His appointment speaks to the excellence of the research conducted in the Faculty of Health Sciences and to IRHM’s desire to strengthen working ties between the University of Ottawa and the Montfort Hospital.

“Dr. Prud’homme’s IRHM appointment shows his great contribution to the area of health sciences and reflects well on the whole Faculty of Health Sciences, a longtime partner of the Montfort Hospital,” said Sylvie Lauzon, interim faculty dean. “I would like to warmly congratulate him and wish him much success. I would also like to take the opportunity to salute his predecessor, Andrée Durieux-Smith, and highlight the outstanding job that she did as first scientific director of IRHM.”
