Record number of students to graduate during uOttawa Spring Convocation

OTTAWA, June 4, 2013  —  The University of Ottawa will confer degrees on a record number of students—7,875—of whom 5,300 will be present during Convocation ceremonies to be held at the National Arts Centre’s Southam Hall from June 7 to 11.

An exciting and important milestone for students and their families, Convocation signifies the end of years of commitment and hard work. No one understands this more than students who have overcome obstacles to pursue their academic goals. A dedicated volunteer and community builder, a student with autism and a student with a blood disorder are just a few of the remarkable young men and women with stories of courage, strength and determination participating in this year’s Convocation ceremonies.

The University will also recognize Karina Joly and Ted Shen, who died tragically in a car accident in September 2012. The Faculty of Law, Civil Law Section will confer posthumous degrees on them, which will be accepted by their families.

Honorary doctorates will be conferred on eight exceptional individuals: the Right Honourable Paul Martin, Jennifer Stoddart, Anne-Marie Cadieux, Michael Chambers, Dr. Elizabeth Cannon, André Marcheterre, Dr. Albert Bandura and Dr. Michel Waldschmidt. Please see the honorary doctorates news release for more information on the recipients.

University class presidents, designated for their exceptional academic performance and community involvement, will deliver commencement addresses at each ceremony.

Social media will take centre stage again this year. A Twitter wall will showcase tweets from graduates, professors, family and friends. Sample tweets sent throughout the Convocation ceremonies will be used to create a story on Storify [external link]. Be sure to follow the excitement on @uOttawa, @uOttawadirect and @uOttawaAlumni. Hashtag: #uOGrad.

For a complete list of ceremonies please see the Convocation website.
