MEDIA ADVISORY: Family and friends join University of Ottawa to honour anatomy donors

OTTAWA, June 3, 2013  —  Medical students, staff and faculty will unite with the families and friends of anatomy donors at the Faculty of Medicine’s annual memorial service to pay tribute and honour the immeasurable contribution the donors have made for the betterment of medical education. This year, Josée Bradley will be speaking at the service in remembrance of her son Misha Garcia, the Faculty’s youngest donor. In 2006, 17-year-old Misha was on a hockey scholarship in the United States when he was unexpectedly rushed to hospital and diagnosed with grade three level brain cancer. A model patient, Misha’s optimism and tenacity served him well during his battle against the disease.

WHEN: Tuesday, June 4 at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
WHERE: Pinecrest Cemetery

Anatomy donors are persons who have given their bodies after death to the Division of Clinical and Functional Anatomy at the Faculty of Medicine. These individuals have chosen to make a unique contribution to the advancement of medicine and education. Through the teaching of human anatomy and skills development, the Body Donation Program emphasizes the immeasurable educational importance of the human body to medical students, residents and practicing physicians.
